Despite having one of the widest ranges of genetically engineered rodent models Horizon can also create custom knockout rat models to meet specific requirements using CRISPR technology complimented with a range of services for drug discovery & basic research. This includes Neuroscience, ADMET, Cardiovascular and Oncology with more models being constantly developed.

Oncology Research Models

Rats are often superior to mice as model organisms, due to their physiology, responses to drugs, and performance during behavioral tests. Their larger size facilitates physiology experimentation, particularly when the studies require dissection, or isolation of specific cell types or specific organ structures. Rats are especially preferred for studies of cancers such as breast, prostate, and bone marrow metastases.

Cardiovascular Research Models

Custom Animal Models

Horizon's in-vivo development specialists can help you design custom, genetically engineered animal models to meet your exact requirements.

Utilising their licensed CRISPR (The Broad Institute, ERS and Harvard) or ZFN technologies (Sigma-Aldrich), a custom animal model can be delivered to your lab in as little as 5 months.

Micro-injection Reagents

If you want to generate your own in vivo models, Horizon can support you with the highest quality reagents. They provide access to professional in vivo-grade, microinjection ready CRISPR reagents expertly designed by the leading experts in genetic engineering.

There are three levels of microinjection, in vivo-grade CRISPR-Cas9 reagents.


The Microinjection-Ready Basic CRISPR-Cas9 reagents include an sgRNA targeting your gene (for knockout applications) and Cas9 protein, and come packaged separately to allow for concentration optimisation.


All of Horizon's CRISPR-Cas9 reagents are validated for cutting efficiency before we inject. With the validated reagents, you will receive only reagents that are proven to cut with high efficiency in an in vitro assay. Five sgRNAs will be designed, and you will receive the best performer.

You'll also have access to Horizon's experienced design team. Their design team has designed nucleases for hundreds of mouse, rat, and even rabbit projects, and has a deep understanding of the optimum target sites for every application. They'll expertly design your sgRNAs for your specific project and application.

Validated Plus

Horizon's Validated+ reagents are their most complete package and offer the most confidence as you generate your model. You'll receive their same expert design and validation services along with a detailed genotyping protocol with validated primers specifically designed for your project. You'll also receive validated primers for the top 10 assayable potential off-target sites for your project. These primers will allow you to demonstrate the specificity of your CRISPR-Cas9 reagents and ease concerns regarding potential off-target effects.


Tumor Xenografts

Developing a new tumor model is time-consuming, requires significant investment and skilled resources to characterise. Transgenic Rodents

Transgenic services range from custom model generation to colony expansion, maintenance, and cryopreservation services backed by top researchers and best practices in animal husbandry. Use of CRISPR/Cas9 to customise mouse models has enabled Horizon to speed up creation of transgenic rodents by eliminating the need for embryonic stem cells to generate genetic modifications.

Horizon's transgenic support services enable you to focus on your next breakthrough and leave the animal model management to them. Horizon also offers a range of in-vivo assay services to help you get the most out of your SAGE research models.


Patient Derived Xenografts

Over 170 carefully curated, well-characterised patient-derived xenograft tumor models are available for use in your facility, or use Horizon’s comprehensive preclinical in vivo efficacy service.

Tumor heterogeneity is a challenge in cancer research and drug development. Examination of cancer cell lines does not offer a comprehensive view of a tumor or tumor microenvironment. This is where it can be helpful to examine a patient derived xenograft (PDX) model of tumors.
