Company Milestones
Millennium Science was founded by Bren Collinson, a leading figure in the Australian life science industry. The company quickly established itself as Australia and New Zealand’s leading distributor of high technology instrumentation and reagents for the biomedical research market.
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Millennium Science merged with Jomar Life Research to expand its range of consumable products to support life science researchers. Millennium Science now offers a comprehensive collection of respected instrument systems and quality reagents. Alex Szabo, PhD becomes CEO.
Affiliated Companies
Millennium Science is majority-owned by the Leading Technology Group (LTG) – a set of affiliated Australian health-tech companies. Other LTG companies are Emeritus Research, a CRO for the pharma industry, Crux Biolabs, a research services provider, Cardiobase, a supplier of specialist hospital software, and Systematic Medicine, a developer of therapeutic strategies for conditions of the ageing process. Through its LTG affiliations, Millennium Science gains expanded access to broader segments of the healthcare market beyond research.
Senior Management Team
Alex Szabo has been leading Millennium Science as CEO since 2020, prior to the merger he was CEO of Jomar Life Research since 2012. Under his leadership, the company has seen a remarkable increase in product sales, exceeding fifty times. Alex brings three decades of experience in the life sciences industry, with significant roles at Affymetrix, BIAcore, Beckman Coulter, and Stratagene (now Agilent). He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biophysics from U.C. Berkeley, a PhD in Biochemistry from MIT, and an MBA from Santa Clara University. His research career included positions at Stanford University, the Pasteur Institute in France, and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Research Institute in New York.
Claire Penney has been with the company since 2019. She brings expertise in single-cell and spatial transcriptomics technologies into her role as Commercial Lead for 10x Genomics. Claire loves to foster ANZ research via the introduction of powerful, reliable tools that fuel scientific discoveries. Prior to joining Jomar Life Research as a Product Manager in 2019, she held academic research positions at Monash University and RMIT. She received her Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne, and undertook her postgraduate studies at Monash University on the immunogenicity of plant-made vaccines. She has also received a Graduate Certificate in Commercialising Research from Monash University.
Julie Chmielowski joined Millennium Science in 2023 and leads our cell analysis focused Product Managers. She brings over 25 years of experience in life sciences, diagnostics, and healthcare, and marketing strategy skills to her current role as the Director of Cell Analysis (ANZ) at Millennium Science. Her career began as a Protein Biochemist at GroPep and progressed through various commercial roles, including sales at Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals, product management at GeneWorks, and marketing communications for BioInnovationSA. Julie’s executive journey started in 2011 with her role as National Manager, Programs at AusBiotech, followed by regional marketing roles at QIAGEN and Eppendorf, and as National Sales Manager, Biomedical for Andi-Co Australia. She holds an Honours Degree in Biotechnology, a Bachelor of Management with a marketing specialisation, and a Certificate IV in Leadership and Management.
Ivor Butler has been leading our team of genomics and proteomics focused Product Managers since 2023. He is a seasoned biotechnology professional and utilises his passion for people and business to create strategic initiatives to promote business development and deliver substantial financial results. He completed a Bachelor of Technology (Honours) from Flinders University after which he began at GroPep as a scientist in 1995, he then expanded his expertise in the Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical industries, notably establishing the Development Department at Moorfield’s Pharmaceuticals in London. In 2009, Ivor transitioned to commercial roles and has since held various sales, management and key account development roles at companies such as – Bio-Rad, Merck Millipore, STEMCELL Technologies, and GenScript.
Paul Gooding joined Millennium Science in 2019 as a Field Application Scientist and has been a leader in developing our genomics portfolio since 2022. His passion for advancements in genomics technologies and highly accurate sequencing has led to significant development of the PacBio instrument placement and user base in Australia. After completing a PhD in Plant Molecular Biology at the John Innes Centre in the UK, in 1998 he held a post-doctoral position at CSIRO Plant Industry, focusing on post-harvest quality of fruits and vegetables, before managing the cereal genetic transformation facility at the University of Adelaide. Prior to joining Millennium Science, Paul spent several years as a Senior Scientist with the Australian Genome Research Facility (AGRF), overseeing Next-Gen Sequencing machines and coordinating genotyping and diversity profiling projects.
Karen McRae-Johns has been with the company since 2017. She uses her first-hand lab experience to help market to researchers needs and helps Millennium Science stand out. Karen has extensive experience in adapting to market trends and using a multi-pronged approach to generate high quality leads to build the sales team’s opportunity pipeline. She holds a PhD in Biochemistry from Monash University, as well as Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of Melbourne. In 2017, she began her transition to life science industry through an internship with Jomar Life Research. She then gained sales and marketing experience as a Product Manager at Jomar Life Research and Millennium Science before her current role with the company.
Michael Taft joined Millennium Science in 2023 and leads our product service and support team. He has over 20 years of experience in the Biomedical Engineering and Field Service Sectors which helps him lead the Millennium Science Service Team to have high calibre of customer training and instrument performance. Michael has a background in Electronic Engineering and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Science from RMIT. He also holds certifications in Technical Training and adult education. Prior to his time with Millennium Science he has held engineering and service-based positions at Eppendorf, Leica Biosystems, and GE Healthcare.
Lucy Ming has led the Finance Team at Millennium Science since 2023. She brings 15 years of senior management experience. Lucy has also successfully conceptualised and managed accounting software transitions, improved processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy, and developed comprehensive budgeting and forecasting methods. Following completion of her Business degree at Deakin University, Lucy became a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA). Throughout her career Lucy has led finance teams in various corporate and non-profit organisations. Prior to her current role, she held positions at Annecto, Lovelight, OPED Australia and Back in Motion Health Group.
Joshua Chilcutt joined Millennium Science in early 2024 and manages Millennium Science’s customer service and logistics team. With a drive for strategic process optimisation and over a decade of experience, he helps Millennium Science continue to improve company operational efficiency and optimise supply chain and logistics operations. Joshua has Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, specialising in Warehousing and Logistics.
